You Never See It Coming, Though You Know Someone It’s Happened To

Why a career backup plan after 50 matters more than you think.

Fact is, you’ve watched it happen to everybody else, haven’t you? One of your coworkers got a call. A neighbor became a caregiver overnight. And you probably said the same thing everybody says. “Man, that’s tough. I hope things work out for them.” Then you just went on about your day.

That’s just how life works. You clock it, you feel for them, and you move on.

Your Gut and Your Brain Are on Two Different Frequencies

Here’s the thing. Watching this kind of stuff happen to somebody else and expecting it to happen to you are two completely different things. They’re on two completely different frequencies.

You can know that a layoff can happen. That health scares happen. That a caregiving thing can come out of nowhere. But knowing that in general and understanding it can happen to you are not the same thing.

One’s just a fact you hold in your head.

The other silently lives in your gut, hoping it never happens to you.

And that one in your gut?

You’re almost afraid that somehow it’ll happen just by thinking about it too much, or talking about it.

So you keep pushing it down. Trying to avoid the entire topic.

If you want to get all fancy about it, there’s a name for that. Psychologists call it normalcy bias.

Really, it just means your mind assumes things will keep going the way they’ve always gone, right up until they don’t.

That’s really a survival trick, and most of the time it’s right. Most days, most years in fact, do go on the way they went the day before. But the problem is, that trick doesn’t know when to shut off.

Why “It Won’t Happen to Me” Feels So Reasonable

Here’s why that happens. You’ve got thirty years of Monday through Fridays that went just fine. That’s not nothing. That’s real evidence. You’ve got the data to back it up, right?

So when you hear about what happened to poor ol’ Dave in the front office, it’s not really something you need to worry about. After all, you’ve got all that evidence that everything’s going to keep going like it has for years. That’s not some “new normal” you need to plan for.

But there’s a second part to this too, and it’s a lot quieter than the first.

Admitting that you need a backup plan feels like you’re admitting your current situation is shaky. Most people don’t even want to think that their job, their health, their situation, is kinda iffy.

So having a backup plan just never gets built. It just gets put on the back burner.

Probably not you being lazy. Just some sort of weird loyalty to the story you’ve been telling yourself about how solid and great things are.

A backup plan is that same kind of instinct behind the old 70’s commercials, ‘Get a piece of the Rock.’ If you remember those old Prudential ads, you know exactly what I mean.

It’s having something solid standing behind you, put in place before you ever need it, not scrambled together the day everything goes sideways.

The Fix Isn’t Worry. It’s Getting a Head Start.

Now listen, this doesn’t mean you walk around bracing yourself for disaster. That’s its own kind of exhausting, and it’s not what a plan is for anyway.

Having a plan isn’t predicting that something bad is going to happen. It’s having your first three moves already worked out. You’re not trying to invent them on the fly, on the worst day of the last thirty years.

The people who come through these moments in the best shape aren’t the ones worrying and nail-biting.

They’re the ones who did a little thinking ahead of time, while things were still fine.

The thinking was already done by the time they needed it, so they weren’t starting from zero when the day finally came.

Where to Start

This is what a real career backup plan after 50 actually gives you. An actual sequence, mapped out before you need it.
