Second Act Brand

It’s Not About Finding a New Job. It’s About Deciding You’re Not Done.

Career reinvention after 50 starts with a mindset shift, not a resume.

I was laid off at 68, three weeks before Christmas. It wasn’t the first time life forced me to start over. If you’re 50 or older facing reinvention, here’s what I’ve learned about coming back stronger.

01.

It Starts With What's Between Your Ears

I've changed careers more than once, and the hard part was never the resume. It was deciding I wasn't done. Get your mindset right first, and the rest starts to move on its own.

02.

The Tactics I Actually Used to Get There

Nobody handed me a playbook. I built one myself, one pivot at a time, mostly by trial and error. Here's the truth about what worked, what didn't, and what I'd tell you to skip.

03.

Career Reinvention After 50, For Real

This is the part everybody expects first: transferable skills, remote work, what's hiring people our age right now. It's real. It's just not the whole story, not even for me.

About Second Act Brand

Welcome! I'm T.L. Walters, founder of Second Act Brand. I spent 13 years as a public speaker, went back into precision machining, and later spent five years as a remote content creator for a major SaaS company. Then at 68, laid off. That's when I started Second Act Brand.

Here’s the thing. None of that looked like a plan while I was living it. It looked like a winding road. But every one of those turns taught me something I couldn’t have learned staying put, and that’s exactly what I bring to you now.

Your experience isn’t the obstacle. It’s the asset. Second Act Brand exists to help people 50 and older take what they’ve already lived through and turn it into what comes next: a new career, a steadier mindset, real digital skills that actually work.

This isn’t about finding a job. It’s about building a life that still has some fight left in it. There’s more to how I got here, and it’s worth the read, further down the page.

You're Not Starting Over Alone

Here's the story that started all of this, mine.

Why I Started Second Act Brand

I spent years as a Class A machinist before becoming a full-time public speaker, thirteen years, more than 25 states and into Canada, hundreds of events. In the middle of that, my father was diagnosed with Parkinson's, Lou Gehrig's, and Alzheimer's. I put my career on hold for his care, and standing at his bedside in 2004 when he passed put me face to face with my own mortality. Over the next year, we lost five family members and our family dog. Those were hard years, and they pulled us back toward home and family. I eventually left the speaking circuit and went back into precision machining, the trade I already knew. I stayed there 13 years, until a bait and switch, a position I'd been promised went to someone else, made it clear there was no future for me there. I lined up a new job first, then turned in my retirement papers. Two weeks later I left manufacturing on a Friday and started as a content creator for a SaaS company the following Monday. Five years there. Then, at 68, laid off three weeks before Christmas, right before a bonus I'd been counting on. None of it was smooth. None of it was planned. But every piece of it taught me something the last one couldn't, and that's what Second Act Brand is built on.
